Bergen County Technical Schools

Bergen County Technical Schools

Bergen County Technical Schools is a county vocational school district that serves as the vocational / technical education arm of all the school districts within the 70 municipalities in Bergen County, New Jersey. The primary programs offered are the Bergen County Academies and Bergen County Technical High School.

Because technical and vocational schooling is always closely tied to the job market, the cornerstone of the District’s success has been its ability to adapt to the changing needs of local industry. In 1992, the Academy for the Advancement of Science and Technology (AAST) opened and became the model for the seven existing magnet high school programs that meld college-prep level classes with a career focus. Secondary programs also include a full-time Technical High School in Teterboro, a Vocational High School in Paramus and shared time Technical Education Centers at both campuses.

For the 1997-98 school year, the Academy for the Advancement of Science and Technology was named a "Star School" by the New Jersey Department of Education, the highest honor that a New Jersey school can achieve [ [http://www.state.nj.us/cgi-bin/education/ss/ss3.pl?string=id=044&maxhits=10000 New Jersey Department of Education Star School Award recipient detail 1997-98 school year, Academy for the Advancement of Science and Technology] , accessed July 13, 2006] .

In 2001, BCTS entered into a unique partnership with the Englewood Public School District in Englewood to create a new magnet school program, Academies@Englewood within Dwight Morrow High School. The Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders has been supportive of the initiative.
