" _ar. ʿAlī" (Arabic: _ar. علي ) is a male Arabic name, derived from the Arabic root _ar. ʿ-L-Y which means "high". It is a common name in Arabic countries, as well as Iran, and parts of Africa.

The first person to be given this name was Ali ibn Abu Talib, the Islamic leader and cousin with Muhammad. His name is said to be derived from "al-`Alī" (the [most] high), one of the 99 names of God. Other people called Ali:
