Idaho's 2nd congressional district includes the Eastern Idaho and Magic Valley regions of the state and other outlying areas, as well as a small portion of the Boise metropolitan area. Major cities in the district include Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, Rexburg, Burley and Mountain Home.

George W. Bush received 69% of the vote in this district in 2004. The district has a Cook Partisan Voting Index score of R +23. A strongly Mormon area, the district has been continuously represented by a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1951.

Since 1999 the district has been represented in the United States House of Representatives by Mike Simpson, a Republican from Blackfoot.

The district was created for the 1918 Congressional election by the Idaho Legislature. The boundaries have been changed several times by reapportionment.
