Visarga ("IAST|visarga") is a
Sanskrit word meaning "sending forth, discharge". In Sanskritphonology ("IAST|śikṣā"), "IAST|visarga" (also called, equivalently, "IAST|visarjanīya" by earlier grammarians) is the name of aphone , IPA| [h] , written asIAST <IAST|ḥ>,Harvard-Kyoto , Devanagari <Unicode|ः>. Visarga is anallophone of IPA|/r/ and IAST|/s/ inpausa (at the end of anutterance ). Since IPA|/-s/ is a commondesinence (nominative singular, second person singular, etc.), visarga appears frequently in Sanskrit texts. In the traditional order of Sanskrit sounds, visarga together withanusvara appears between vowels and stop consonants.The precise pronunciation of visarga in Vedic texts may vary between
shakha s. Some pronounce a slight echo of the preceding vowel after the fricative, for example IAST|aḥ will be pronounced IPA| [ɐhɐ] , and IAST|iḥ will be pronounced IPA| [ihi] .In Burmese, the visarga ( _my. ◌း), when used with joined to a letter, creates the high tone.
