Charlotte Hornets (disambiguation)

Charlotte Hornets (disambiguation)

Charlotte Hornets may refer to several sports teams based in Charlotte, North Carolina:

* New Orleans Hornets, a professional basketball team formerly based in Charlotte (1988–2002)
* Charlotte Hornets (baseball), a minor league baseball team that was based in Charlotte, North Carolina (1901–1973)
* Charlotte Hornets (WFL), a defunct World Football League team (1974–1975)
* Not to be confused with the professional basketball team out of Charlotte now, the Charlotte Bobcats

The nickname "Hornets" for Charlotte teams is historically based in the American Revolution, during which the British General Cornwallis referred to American resistance in the vicinity as a "hornet's nest". The name stuck as a nickname for the city itself.
