- Canning, Liverpool
Canning, is in the city centre of
Liverpool ,England , bounded to the south by Upper Parliament Street, to the east by Grove Street, to the north by Myrtle Street and to the west by Pilgrim Street andHope Street .Canning is also known locally as "The Georgian Quarter" as it is an area of almost uniformly residential
Georgian architecture . The area derives its name fromGeorge Canning , (1770–1827), who was a Britishpolitician who served as Foreign Secretary and, briefly, Prime Minister. In 1800 the
Liverpool Corporation Surveyor,John Foster, Sr. , (1758–1827) prepared a gridiron plan for a large area of peat bog known as Mosslake Fields, which was to the east of Rodney Street.Originally the area was wealthy but with the decline of Liverpool most of the wealthier elemnents moved out. The presence of the Art College on Hope Street and the Phil gave rise to a creative atmosphere. This atmosphere is beginning to fade as the area once again becomes associated with status.
