Army Medical College, Abid Majeed Road, Rawalpindi, Pakistan is the medical training institute of the Pakistan Armed Forces and is a unit of the National University of Science and Technology. It was established in 1977; the 1st course of 99 girls & boys was inducted on 26th March, now celebrated as the "Raising Day". Within years it became the most sought after medical college of Pakistan.

History

Need for establishing Army Medical College was felt after many years of experience of commissioning the medical graduates of civil medical colleges of Pakistan into the armed forces, the majority of whom were either conscripted or joined the Army on emergency basis and did not stay permanently in the Army. This had resulted in a chronic shortage of doctors in the Armed Forces of Pakistan and unbalanced career structure of regular cadre of medical officers of the Army Medical Corps. Thus Army Medical College was established in 1977, by the Government of Pakistan to provide well-trained, competent, disciplined and confident medical officers who would long cherish their career in the Army Medical Corps.

Founder principal of the college, Lt Gen (Retd) Ayub Khan, affectionately called "Baba" by all Amcolians, took the tough challenge of getting the institution recognized against all odds. He not only succeeded in doing so on national level but soon the college was recognized for its excellent academic records the world over.

The College, formerly a completely residential institute, started imparting medical education to the selected Medical Cadets of the first MBBS course in 1977. Successful training lead to the graduation and award of MBBS Degree by the Quaid-i-Azam University. College is now affiliated, since 1998 with National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST).

Academics

Army Medical College (AMC) has its curricula expanded over 5 years of essential medical education, and then the graduates are required to get one year of internship.First 2 years cover the basics of medical education, including:

* Physiology
* Histology
* Biochemistry

Clinical clerkships start from third year onwards, including:
* Medicine
* Surgery
* Pediatrics
* Ophthalmology
* Otorhinolaryngology
* Gynaecology and Obstetrics

Similarly dental students are categorized into different categories like ASDC (Addional Selected Dental Cadets), MDC (Medical Dental Cadets), PDC (Paying Dental Cadets), FDS (Foreign Dental Students) and NDC (NUST Dental Cadets). After graduation and basic military training, the Dental Cadets are inducted into the Dental Corps of the Pak Army as officers in the rank of Captain.

Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Rawalpindi
A 1200-bed hospital with 4 surgical units & departments of General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Fascio-maxillary surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics and Physical Medicine. It also has a Burn Care Unit and a Trauma Center.Recognized by General Medical Council of UK for post-graduate training in Surgery.
Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) Rawalpindi
Founded June 1978. A new modern building was later on constructed, with 250 bed capacity. The institute provides specialised cardiology care, not only to the Armed Forces personnel, but also to the civilians from all over the country.
Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) Rawalpindi
At the time of independence, it was functioning as the Command Laboratory, Northern India. It was converted into Central Military Pathology Labs for the medical units of armed forces. On 20th August, 1957 it was re-designated as the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Later on, a new building was constructed. AFIP is working as the central reference laboratory for Pakistan, with the latest scientific equipments and widest range of diagnostic tests in the country. It also act as post-graduate institute for:

Microbiology (including bacteriology & virology)
Biochemistry
Hematology
It carries out research in various projects approved by the Armed Forces Medical Research Council and the Pakistan Medical Research Council (PMRC).
