East and West Morton

East and West Morton

East Morton is a village which lies 1 mile north of Bingley and 3 miles south-east of Keighley, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. The village of East Morton was mentioned in the Domesday Book.

It is a small village with a Public House called the Busfeild Arms and a Church of England Primary School. The Busfeild Arms is named after the local Busfeild family who lived in the area in the 19th Century, hence the apparent mis-spelling of the name. The church, St. Luke's, dates back to only 1851, when it was consecrated for worship. The parish of Morton was formally created by an act of Parliament in 1846.

East Morton has grown substantially in recent years, with several major housing developments, including 'Waterside Fold' which adjoins the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Only part of Waterside Fold actually lies within Riddlesden, contrary to some local opinion. The village also incorporates a golf course called Fardew.

West Morton remains largely a collection of farmhouses and cottages spread over a wide area, and sits at the southern foot of Rombalds Moor. Rombalds Moor is adjacent to the more widely known Ilkley Moor famous for its song about not wearing hats and ducks playing football etc.
