Van Horne Mansion

Van Horne Mansion

The Van Horne Mansion was a classic, ornate, greystone house in the exclusive Golden Square Mile district of Montreal that once belonged to Canadian railroad magnate William Cornelius Van Horne. It existed on Sherbrooke Street at the corner of Stanley. It was renowned for its outstanding architecture. It was torn down by developer David Azraeli in 1973 under the mayoralty of Jean Drapeau to make way for what was considered by many architecture lovers an eyesore. The destruction of this architectural gem was very controversial and spurred a lot of anger. The Sofitel Hotel today stands at the spot occupied by the Van Horne mansion.
