Organization of the New York City Fire Department

The Fire Department of New York, like most fire departments around the world, is organized in a paramilitary fashion.

Executive Staff

The Department's executive staff is divided into two areas including a civilian fire commissioner who is in charge of the Department and a Fire Chief who is the operational lead. The current fire commissioner is Salvatore J. Cassano. and the current Chief of Department is Edward Kilduff. The 32-member executive staff includes the civilian fire commissioners who are responsible for bureaus within the Department, along with the Chief of Department, Chief of Fire Operations, Chief of EMS, the Chief Fire Marshal and the nine staff chiefs. Staff chiefs include the seven citywide tour commanders, the Chief of Safety, and the Chief of Fire Prevention.^[1]

Bureau of Operations

Under the Chief of Fire Operations there are five borough chiefs, each responsible for one of the five political boundaries within New York City.

Below the borough, the department is organized into functional units. Each borough is subdivided into smaller units called divisions and further divided into battalions. A battalion is a collection of FDNY resources or “units” (e.g., engine and ladder companies) responsible for a geographical area of the city. Four to five firefighters and one officer generally make up a unit. Five to eight units make up a battalion. Four to seven battalions make up a division.^[1]

In a department with the history and size of the FDNY there are bound to be reorganizations within the department structure. The dates below reflect the original organization dates of the active Divisions and the original and final reorganization dates of the disbanded divisions.
