Rangia (also spelt as Rangiya) is a city and a municipal board in Kamrup district in the Indian state of Assam. It is the regional divisional headquarters of the North East Frontier Railway.

Geography

Rangia is located at coord|26.47|N|91.63|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/3/Rangia.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Rangia] ] . It has an average elevation of 39 metres (127 feet).

Etymology

The word "Rangia" come from two Assamese word "ran" and "dia", which together means 'to give fight'.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Rangia had a population of 24,893. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Rangia has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 67%. In Rangia, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. In this town people from different communities used to live here.
