Thomas Meehan (writer)

Thomas Meehan is a Tony award-winning writer, best known for "Annie", "The Producers" and "Hairspray".Thomas Meehan grew up in Suffern, New York. His father died when he was still young and his mother went to work as a night nurse to support the family. She later rose to supervisor and is remembered for her competence and compassion. All four of her children graduated from college and some went on to further degrees. Meehan graduated from Hamilton College, New York in 1951.

He received his first Tony Award in 1977 for writing the book for "Annie", his Broadway debut, and subsequently won for "The Producers" (2001) and "Hairspray" (2002). Additional credits include "Ain't Broadway Grand", "Oh Kay!", "Bombay Dreams", a musical adaptation of "I Remember Mama", and "", which was subsequently reworked and re-staged Off-Broadway as "Annie Warbucks". In addition, he is a long-time contributor of humor to "The New Yorker", an Emmy Award-winning writer of television comedy, and a collaborator on a number of screenplays, including Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs", a remake of "To Be or Not to Be", the film adaptation of "The Producers"; and"One Magic Christmas".

Meehan's latest projects are"Young Frankenstein", a 2007 musical stage adaptation of the 1974 film written in collaboration with Brooks, "Cry-Baby" and "Elf".

Meehan is a member of the Council of the Dramatists Guild of America.
