Strathnaver

Strathnaver

Strathnaver or Strath Naver (Scottish Gaelic, "Srath Nabhair") is the strath of the River Naver, in the Sutherland area of the Highland Highland of Scotland. The Strathnaver area is also known as Farr.

The strath runs from AltnaharraOrdnance Survey grid references:

* For Bettyhill: gbmappingsmall|NC706618
* For Farr Point: gbmappingsmall|NC716648] to Bettyhill on the Atlantic coast, a distance of 37km (23 miles).

The village of Farr is in the north of the area, near Bettyhill, Farr Bay and Farr Point. Strathnaver is, generally, within the former civil parish of Farr.

History

Strathnaver was the location of some of the worst forced evictions of the Highland clearances in the early 19th century. Strathnaver is the ancestral home of the MacKay/ McKay clan.

Natural History

The River Naver is designated a Special Area of Conservation due to its importance for Atlantic salmon " Salmo salar", and Freshwater pearl mussels "Margaritifera margaritifera", despite past pearl-fishing.
