Two Sicilies piastra

Two Sicilies piastra

The piastra was the currency of the Two Sicilies between 1815 and 1860. It was subdivided into 120 "grana" (singular: "grano"), each of 2 "tornesi" (singular: "tornese"). Accounts were kept in "ducato", worth 100 grana [ [http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=poU2AAAAMAAJ&pg=PR40&lpg=PR40&dq=ducato+piastra+lira+%22two+sicilies%22&source=web&ots=xm0PsLuBxB&sig=l8RP99-KwCQR9IZnhgtBW73hLDE&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result] A Handbook for Travellers in Southern Italy (1868)] .The piastra was a continuation of the Sicilian piastra and the Neapolitan piastra issued prior to 1815, although the Sicilian piastra had been subdivided into 240 grana. In the mainland part of the kingdom, the piastra also replaced the Neapolitan lira.

The piastra was replaced by the Sardinian lira and then the Italian lira at a rate of 1 piastra = 5.1 lire.

Coins

Copper coins were issued in denominations of ½, 1, 1½, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 tornese, together with silver 5, 10, 20, 60 and 120 grana coins, the largest of which was equal to 1 piastra. Gold coins were issued for 3, 6, 15 and 30 ducati (equivalent to 2½, 5, 12½ and 25 piastra).
