Peter Andrew Furler is an Australian musician, best known as the lead singer and guitarist for the Contemporary Christian pop rock band Newsboys.

Biography

Furler was born in South Australia on September 8, 1966, the third of six children of Christian Revival Crusade (and later Assemblies of God) pastor Bill Furler and his wife Rosalie. He frequently drove his five siblings (Debbie, Vicki, Mark, Julie, and David) crazy by banging on anything he could find, such as the back seat of the car or his lap. As a teenager, he was able to listen to the radio, hear the first chord of a song, and instantly know which song it was.

Peter became a Christian at the age of 17. In 1986, he formed the band The Newsboys with George Perdikis and John James. Originally, the band's name was "the News", but was changed to the present name soon after. He has written most of the Newsboys' songs. The Newsboys frequently collaborate with Steve Taylor, so there are many times where Taylor writes the lyrics and Furler comes up with the music. Furler was originally the band's drummer and background vocalist but became a guitarist and the band's lead vocalist when James left the band. He still plays drums occasionally. He was also the auto mechanic for the "Refrigerator", the Newsboys' first touring bus. His first concert was at his sister Julie's sixteenth birthday. When he played the drums, he used a rotating drum kit and got dizzy every time. On one occasion, he got stuck under the kit and had to be cut down by the crew.

On the "Love Liberty Disco" Dome Tour in 2000, at the Oklahoma City show, a large mirror ball fell on his head, causing him to be taken to hospital, and stopping the show with one song left (which was "Not Ashamed"), which they did not get to play.

Peter is married to Mylon LeFevre's daughter, Summer.
