Assault Glider Trust

The Assault Glider Trust is a registered charity established in 2001 and based at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire.

In 2000, veterans of the Glider Pilot Regiment Association decided that an appropriate memorial to airborne forces in the Midlands might be to build a complete Airspeed Horsa glider. Assault Gliders were used in many operations during WWII, including the Battle of the Netherlands, the Invasion of Crete, the Invasion of Sicily, Operation Overlord, Operation Market Garden, Operation Varsity and the Chindit campaign. The Trust hopes to commemorate these actions by building an Airspeed Horsa and an American CG-4A Waco. The Trust also aim to convert a Dakota to its original parachute and glider tug function. In 2001, RAF Shawbury offered a home for the construction of the aircraft. BAE Systems found the original working drawings for a Horsa and allowed these to be used as long as the aircraft would not be flown. [ http://www.assaultgliderproject.co.uk/html/background_full.html AGT Full Story]
