Manipal University, formerly known as Manipal Academy of Higher Education or MAHE for short, is a deemed university in Manipal, Karnataka, India. It has over 20,000 students from over 50 countries.[1] The university has branch campuses in Bangalore, Mangalore, Dubai, Malaysia and Antigua.[2]

Manipal University has over 22 constituent colleges[1] offering various programs in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Allied Health Sciences, Architecture, Engineering, Management, Hospitality, Jewellery design, Mass Communication and Regenerative Medicine.

The university town of Manipal was founded by T. M. A. Pai in 1953. He was first to a start private, self financing medical college offering MBBS in India. Pai established the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal in 1953 and Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1957, which was followed by a string of other education institutions including Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, Manipal College of Dental Sciences and Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Since the demise of T. M. A. Pai in 1979, his son Ramdas Pai has taken over the management of the university. In 1993, MAHE was accorded a deemed university status under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.[3]

Campus

Manipal University campus covers 500 acres (2.0 km2)[4] of land with 15,000 inhabitants[4] and is built on laterite rock. The town of Manipal has been converted into a university town with emphasis on eco-friendly living by Manipal University.

Manipal University has been certified as an ISO 14001:2004 organization which is a series of voluntary standards on Environmental Management Systems (EMS) developed and maintained by ISO. The ISO 14000 family addresses “Environmental Management".[5]

Facilities

Infrastructure

The lecture halls/ classrooms are centrally air conditioned.[6] The campus building consists of three conference halls that can accommodate about 250 people. The auditorium can seat up to 1,760 people. There is an exhibition hall of plinth 15,000 sq ft (1,400 m2) that can accommodate over 850 people.[7]

Dining facility

The campus has dining services and facilities that cater to over 800 people and is centrally air conditioned. A food court with a range of cuisines from Indian and international foods is on campus.[8]

Innovation Centre

The MIT Innovation Centre was established to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of MIT. The aim of the Centre is to nurture innovation, facilitate inter-disciplinary research, provide basic funding in seed money, and resources for start-ups from students, faculty and the university.

Six patents have been filed. An external fund has been sanctioned for innovation and incubation (DST).[9]

Simulation lab

The Medical Simulation Centre is the first of its kind in a private Indian university.[10] The centre has a spectrum of trainers including complex, interactive, computer-based training units such as the SimMan™[11] and SimBaby™.[12] More than 100 training manikins[12] for the use of undergraduate and postgraduate students of all disciplines in health sciences.[13]

Sports facilities

The campuses have playgrounds and courts for cricket, hockey, football, tennis, basketball, badminton and volleyball.[14] There are swimming pools, a gym and an athletics track.[14] The indoor sports complex in Manipal, which is 142,132 sq ft (13,204.5 m2), has badminton courts, volley ball court, basketball courts, squash court, indoor jogging track along with a gym and sauna.[14]

Student accommodation

Manipal Hostel Building

Manipal University has a separate hostel section under the Hostel Management Committee and is headed by a chairperson. The Chief Warden, MU, Manipal Campus, who is the secretary of the Committee, administers the day-to-day aspects of hostel management.

Each hostel has a Warden from the teaching faculty of the colleges who is responsible for the discipline, maintenance of building, allotment of rooms, etc. The hostel staff consists of caretakers/block supervisors, other attendants and maintenance staff. The Manipal Servicecorp Facility Management Pvt. Ltd. (MSFM) looks after the maintenance of the buildings and other facilities in the hostels. The hostel provides a cot, a mattress, a study table, a chair and a cupboard for each student. Every hostel has uninterrupted electricity, solar heated water facility, water cooler, common telephone, common TV room, common reading room etc.[15] Students can take an independent telephone connection for an additional payment. Some hostels have a gymnasium and indoor games facilities.

There are messes in different areas of the campus. Students can choose to be a member of any of these messes.[15]

Libraries

Manipal University has a chain of six libraries that support various schools.[16]

Health Sciences Library - Manipal

The Health Sciences Library[17] built-up area of 1.5 lakh square feet on five floors is stacked with books for the use of students, faculty and researchers of health sciences. Designed for space and natural lighting, it can accommodate 1,300 users[17] at a time.

Kasturba Medical College Central Library - Mangalore

The Kasturba Medical College Central Library, Mangalore came into being with the establishment of the college in 1953[18] and is in the KMC, Utility Building, Light House Hill Road, Mangalore. The library extends over 2,025 sq. meters on three floors[18] and can accommodate over 400 users[18] at a time.

Manipal Institute of Technology Library

The Central Library of Manipal Institute of Technology is a three-storey building occupying an area of about 70,000 square feet (6,500 m2).[19] It can accommodate 800 users[19] at a time. Technical and general books, journals, magazines and their back volumes, and DVDs are available to faculty and students.

WelcomGroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration Library

Established in 1986,[20] the library is equipped with 5,634 books[20] on hotel management and allied subjects. It subscribes to nearly 40 journals[20] on general and trade subjects from all over the world.

The library also has a collection of over 190 videocassettes,[20] four Internet terminals, and an audio video section.

Manipal Institute of Communication Library

The Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) Library, with more than 9,000 books[21] and other resources, is spread over an area of 3,000 square feet (280 m2),[21] and can accommodate around 100 students[21] at a time. The library is equipped with books, Internet browsing, online database, online journals, CDs/DVDs, etc. There is a separate audio visual room to view the electronic documents.

Manipal Institute of Management Library

MIM Library and Information Centre has a vast collection of management books and the latest national and international journals.[22] Apart from printed resources, the library has procured Business Source Premier online database with CD version from EBSCO that provides access to full text coverage of scholarly business management and economics journals. MIM is the only institute in south India which has the prestigious UN Depository Collection.[22]

Research

Manipal University encourages research in various fields. Budgetary provisions are given for research through capital allocations for the maintenance of animal facility, consumables, equipment etc. Experts from research groups from all over the world contribute as adjunct members of faculty. Rs 1.5 crore[23] was sanctioned to MIT in 2008–2009 towards funding innovation. A five-member student team from MIT won the prestigious Innovation Competition in 2008,[24] organized by GE’s largest R&D centre outside the U.S.: the John F. Welch Technology Centre (JFWTC) Bangalore.[23]

MIT has interdisciplinary labs constituted under the Innovation Centre, where several research programmes in emerging areas such as nanotechnology, ad hoc wireless networks, nuclear engineering, VLSI design and pattern recognition are being pursued. A collaborative project with Philips in the area of sustainable and ecofriendly technology and telemedicine at the BOP level is being pursued.[25]

MCOPS, Manipal sends its second-year PG students for collaborative research programmes at R&D centres all over the country. Often the research carried out by them becomes a part of the intellectual property of the company. MCOPS has ongoing programmes in novel drug delivery systems, formulation development and preclinical screening of drug candidates. The TIFAC CORE programme in pharmacogenomics envisages the development of personalized medicine. The MLSC engages its laboratories in rendering diagnostic advice to Kasturba Hospital in complicated cases. MCOPS has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Wyoming, Laramie, USA, under which a candidate registered for Ph.D. under MU will receive training and research guidance at the Laramie campus, leading to a split-campus Ph.D. MCOPS has been awarded a 1.3 crore[23] DST research grant in collaboration with US Vitamins, Ltd Mumbai for the development of biodegradable sustained-release formulations.[23]

The Manipal Life Science Centre has a dedicated research team and is undertaking several research projects funded by DBT, DST, etc. MLSC is linked to several international research institutions such as Wistar Institute Philadelphia, University of Queensland, etc. A patient-friendly device for the early detection of malignancy has been developed by the Department of Laser Spectroscopy collaboration with M/s Philips.[26]

MARG

The Manipal Advanced Research Group (MARG) was formed in early 2006[27] with an aim to grow new research projects in fundamental sciences and interdisciplinary areas. This initiative also seeks to establish synergies between basic research, biomedical science and engineering.[28]

Agreements for academic collaborations in the natural sciences have been signed with Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai (www.tifr.res.in), Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung mbH (GSI), Darmstadt, Germany (www.gsi.de) and the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research (www.jinr.ru) Dubna, Russia.[29]

  • Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences has been ranked third in the country and first among the private colleges of pharmacy by Career 360's "India's Best Pharmacy Colleges 2011".[30]
  • Manipal Institute of Technology ranked fifth among the Top 10 private engineering colleges in India by OutlookIndia.[31]
  • KMC ranked eighth among the Top 20 Medical Colleges in India by Outlook.[31]
  • Manipal College of Dental Sciences was ranked first among the Top 15 Dental Colleges in India by the Outlook ranking.[31]
  • WGSHA ranked third among Top 10 Hotel Management Institutes in India by the Outlook ranking.[31]
  • KMC ranked fifth amongst the Top 30 Medical Colleges in India by the Hindustan Times Horizon Report.[32]
