"Viva Max!" is a 1969 comedy film directed by Jerry Paris. The film was written by Elliott Baker and based on a 1966 novel by Jim Lehrer.

Plot

The story involves a platoon of Mexican soldiers under the command of General Maximilian "(Peter Ustinov)" marching up Texas highways and San Antonio freeways, reluctantly attempting to retake The Alamo in modern times. Of course this leads to retaliation by U. S. military forces, complete with helicopter support.

Production

The filming of this movie was controversial in that certain historical groups (namely The Daughters of the Republic of Texas) objected to the filming of the Alamo to the point of staging protests at filming locations. This caused some of the scenes to be filmed at an Alamo replica in Brackettville, Texas and interior shots at studios in Italy instead of on location.
