"Tom Sawyer" was a popular 1973 theatrical version of the Mark Twain boyhood adventure story, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". It starred Johnny Whitaker as Tom Sawyer, Jodie Foster as Becky Thatcher and Jeff East as Huckleberry Finn. Native American actor Kunu Hank whose birth name was Henry O' Brien took the role of Injun Joe.
Eric Schweig popularized this vicious character in Tom and Huck (1995). The movie was produced by "Reader's Digest". Along with the Twain story, the film was also a musical, with screenplay and songs by the "Sherman Brothers," aka Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman.
Charlie Pride performed the opening tune "River Song". The film garnered some scandal as both boy actors appeared nude in the "Freebootin'" segment. This was shot in Arrow Rock, Missouri and Howes Cave, New York.Another similar film was released on television that same year.

"Huckleberry Finn" was the follow-up film to it, that came out the next year.
