It boasts islands of multi-coloured serpentine rock with stacks and arches hidden amongst the towering cliffs. An outstanding feature is the fact that at high tide a sandy beach which faces the water on two sides and a small island, which becomes a tidal island, are cut off and thus inaccessible. Kynance Café

At the back of the cove is the Kynance Café which first opened for business in 1929 which until recent years relied on spring water and a generator for power. When the Café became the property of the National trust in 1999, the Trust renovated and improved services to Kynance Café and Kynance Beach Cottage by connecting mains water and electricity from the main Helston to Lizard road, about three quarters of a mile away.

erpentine Rocks

One unique feature of Kynance and other near-by beaches and coves is the serpentine granite rock formations. The rocks are called serpentine are so called because they resemble the mottled, green skin of the serpent. the rocks of green and red serpentine, polished by the sea over thousands of years are distinctive to Kynance Cove and the Lizard Peninsula. There are local stone turning shops in the near-by village of the Lizard that turn the serpentine in to interesting ornamental shapes and objects.

History

The cove became popular in the early Victorian era, with many distinguished visitors including Alfred Lord Tennyson. [ [http://www.swcp.org.uk/old-site/kynance.html Kynance] ]

The BBC has described Kynance Cove as "one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South West." [ [http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/sevenwonders/southwest/south-west-cornwall/index.shtml BBC sevenwonders south-west-cornwall] ]
