Liverpool Collegiate Institution

The Liverpool Collegiate Institution is a former school in Liverpool, England.It opened its doors to pupils on 6th January 1843. The Institution was a day school for boys, sons of middle-class Liverpudlians, and aimed to provide them with a suitable education encompassing instruction in the sciences, commerce and religion. The second verse of the school song (in Latin) began "Intellect spurs us on, manliness inspires us".

Its impressive red sandstone building was designed by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes in neo-Gothic style, and has been nominated as one of the Icons of England Fact|date=February 2007 and is a Grade II* listed building. The School is now Liverpool College, which moved away from the city centre during World War II. The old Liverpool Collegiate Institution building has now been renovated, after a long period of dereliction, into a series of luxury apartments by Urban Splash, an award winning urban regeneration enterprise.

Notable former pupils include Cyril Bibby as well as actors and comedians Leonard Rossiter, Ted Ray, Philip Fox and Sam Kelly. Brian Labone Everton Footballer and Holly Johnson singer with Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Also Pete Best the original Beatles drummer replaced by Ringo Starr.
