Hayton, Cumbria

Hayton is a small village in Cumbria, England, roughly eight miles east of Carlisle, and 10 miles from the England/Scotland border. There is a separate settlement named "Hayton" within Cumbria near Aspatria.

Early area history

Hadrian's Wall runs several kilometres to the north of Hayton. When this wall was constructed by the Romans in the west of England, originally "turf and timber were preferred on the Solway Plain, where stone is scarce", according to C.Michael Hogan. Burnham, The Megalithic Portal] ] Later some stones were imported to augment the wall and some of its associated forts or milecastles.Nowadays Hayton is a quite calm village with few new builds and many traditional houses, places of interest include the traditional shop and the traditional pub serving a mix of local beers.
