Hadise Açıkgöz, (born October 22, 1985 in Mol, Belgium), uses Hadise as stage name, is a TMF award winning Belgian-Turkish R&B singer and songwriter who recently also became a T.V. presenter.

Hadise rose to fame in 2003 when she entered the Flemish version of Pop Idol, at the age of 17. Although she failed to win or even to make it into the semi-finals, she was accorded an album contract after her performance impressed her future manager, Johan Hendrickx, the founder of "2Brain Records". In 2005 Hadise released her debut album "Sweat", also the name of her lead single, was released in Belgium and later in Turkey, where she also found early success. Even though the album failed to chart on the ultratop album chart, it spawned the hit singles: "Stir Me Up", "Milk Chocolate Girl" and "Bad Boy", which all charted on the Ultratop 50.

Taking time off to write new songs for her next album Hadise, she returned to the music scene in 2007 with the single "A Good Kiss". Since 2007, Hadise then released the single "My Body", which became her most successful song in Belgium. Hadise also recorded a Turkish version of the song, "Deli Oğlan" which is currently a huge hit in Turkey peaking at 3 on the Turkish official chart and currently at 4, 9 weeks after its peak.

Hadise is known for her experimenting with the R&B genre often blending it with Turkish pop, which gives her a unique style/sound.

Biography

Ethnic background

Hadise was born on 22 October 1985 in Belgium in a town called Mol, near Antwerp. Hadise's name (meaning 'an event' or 'occurrence' ["Redhouse İngilizce-Türkçe Büyük Elsözlüğü", 1997] ) was her grandfather's idea and was actually intended for Hadise's older sister. He had sent a letter from Turkey to Hadise's parents in Belgium suggesting the name but due to a terrible winter, the letter had arrived late and therefore the name was saved for Hadise.

Her parents came from Sivas, (Turkey) and migrated to Belgium where they settled in the town of Mol. From an early age Hadise knew that she wanted to pursue a career in music, and although she has been a professional singer since the age of 17, she still continued her education and thus gained a BA in Marketing.

Hadise speaks several languages; Turkish, Dutch, English, French and German. Hadise showed her ability to speak all 5 languages when appearing on the "Ibo Show" on June 20 2008.

She is a good friend of the Flemish singer Kate Ryan, who represented Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006.

Hadise's musical talent was first noticed on the Flemish version of Pop Idol, "Idool 2003" (The first Belgium pop Idol). Hadise failed to win, however she was immediately offered an album contract in recognition of her talent.

2005-2006: Sweat

Soon after her appearance on Idool 2003, Hadise received a phone call from Johan Hendrickx, the manager of 2Brain records, since he was impressed with her performance on the show and she was offered an album contract. She later released her debut album Sweat, in November 2005, for who she worked with Yves Gaillard to produce the album. The album failed to chart on the Ultratop 50 albums chart, however spawned five Ultratop 50 singles including; "Sweat", "Stir Me Up", "Milk Chocolate Girl", "Ain't No Love Lost" and "Bad Boy". The album also includes the single "Sisters", which was dedicated to her sisters, Hulya and Derya.

During promotion for Hadise's debut album in Turkey, Hadise presented "Pop stars", this was a huge success for Hadise since the programme attracts an average audience of twenty million a week. This got her onto the cover of the several Turkish magazines, such as "Esquire", "Tempo" and "Aktüel". She is, however, still based in Mol.

2008-present: Hadise

In an interview, Hadise also said she has been working on her new album since December/January 2007 and that the songs have been produced in several countries such as Turkey, France and released her second album in Belgium in June 2008. Hadise chose to take time out between her previous album and her forthcoming album to find more time with her family and to concentrate on songwriting.

Hadise's first single from the album, "A Good Kiss", was released in October 2007 it became the sixth consecutive single to chart within the Belgium "Ultratop 50". "A Good Kiss" also was a success in Turkey where it became the first single by Hadise to official chart on the "Turkish Billboard" chart, peaking at 6. Hadise dedicated the single to all women, saying that a good kiss is very important for them (all women). She later released the Turkish version of the song, with a new music video and is entitled Deli Oğlan, literally meaning "Crazy Boy".

Hadise's second single, My Body, became Hadise's best single, by peak position, peaking at number 8 on the "Ultra Top 50" chart. The video later become available on "Music on demand" in the U.K.

In 2008 Hadise appeared on Serdar Ortaç 2008 album Nefes on a track called "Düşman".

On July 6 2008 Hadise released two singles, "My Man and the Devil on His Shoulder" in Belgium and "Deli Oğlan" in Turkey. Unlike "Devil" which is yet to chart on the Ultratop 50 chart, "Deli Oğlan" debuted on the Turkish Billboard chart at 3, previously being at 98, it is believed that this is the first time which a foreign artist, who usually sings in English, has charted on the Turkish chart. The song is currently receiving huge airplay topping numerous radio charts across Turkey, which has made Hadise even more popular and one of the most talked about artist at the moment.

On July 19, Hadise appeared on Sibel Can's summer talk show "Sayısal Gece" on TRT1, where she performed several songs both from her current album and previous album. Whilst on the show Hadise promised Sibel Can to record a duet together. She then appeared on İbrahim Tatlıses's talk show the "İbo Show", On July 20, to promote the album. Yet again Hadise performed several songs both from her current album and previous album. As well as singing a duet with İbrahim Tatlıses with the song "Mutlu Ol Yeter" and a solo effort of "Ah Askim" [ [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mr8KqQfMoOc YouTube - Broadcast Yourself ] ]

X-factor

In April 2008, it was announced that Hadise would be the new presenter of the Belgium version of X-factor.

Eurovision 2009

Although in 2006 Hadise said she would never take part in the Eurovision Song Contest especially after her friend Kate Ryan failing to make it into the finals, in 2009 Hadise said she would like to take part in the contest representing Turkey. Hadise is yet to receive an official invitation by Turkish broadcaster TRT, but Hadise has been in contact with the TRT to discuss the possibility of taking part in the Eurovision song contest in Russia. Turkish girl group Hepsi is currently the favourite to represent Turkey, however many people prefer Hadise to represent Hadise due to her being familiar in singing in English. On August 2008 it was announced that Hepsi or "Gökhan Özen" would represent Turkey in 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, but a day later TRT broadcasters released a statement confirming that they still hadn't chosen any artist [s] and that they were still choosing.

In early October a Turkish Eurovision fan site held an online poll to see who was the favourite to represent Turkey and it was revealed that Hadise was favourite from a list of 8 artists with 37% of the vote. [ [http://www.numberone.com.tr/anasayfa.php] Retrieved on October 2 2008]

Controversy

Hadise has received criticism for the sexualized image, as Hadise said that "Some Turks think it is great, but others find it over the top". [ [http://www.esctoday.com/news/read/7012 Eurovision Song Contest Serbia 2008 | News - Turkey: Hadise wins poll ] ]

Hadise was later criticised for her music video "Deli Oğlan", even before it was seen by an audience. Some images from the shooting of the video were uploaded online and some of the Turkish media claimed the video was too erotic. In an interview on the MTV Turkiye show 'BeniMTV' (My MTV), Hadise was asked about her feelings about the response to the video images, which Hadise wished not to talk about.

Influences

Hadise has said she cites artists such as Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Brandy. Hadise's songs have also been influenced by Turkish music, which makes her rather unique as an artist, blending both genres of music, R&B and Turkish pop. Examples of songs by her with a strong Turkish slant and an Urban feel include Stir Me Up, Bad Boy, A Good Kiss and "Don't ask".

Acting career

Hadise rejected an offer to star in a two films. One of the films she was offered, was for the leading role in a Turkish movie. Not much about the film was revealed, appart from that the film was about 2 sisters, where Hadise would have played one of the sisters.

In July 2008 Hadise was yet again offered another role in a Turkish comedy film. This is the third time Hadise has been offered a role in a film, but Hadise has previously turned down the offers. However even though Hadise is still deciding on whether to accept the role, it looks like Hadise may take on the role as she is interested in the part and is currently reading through the script.
