The S Stock is a class of sub-surface train currently under construction by Bombardier for the London Underground to replace ageing A60 and A62 Stock on the Metropolitan Line, C69 and C77 Stock on the Circle, Hammersmith & City and District Lines (Edgware Road-Wimbledon) and D78 Stock on the District Line, all of which, when added together, total 177 trains.

The 'S' designation stands for 'Sub-surface,' following the London Underground tradition of designating surface fleets with a letter associated with its intended route. (Thus the "A" stock operates to Amersham, the "C" stock operates the Circle Line, and "D" stock the District Line). The "S" designation was also one of the few letters which had not been historically used to identify a significant fleet, noting that the Metropolitan Railway S-stock of 1936 was only formed of one eight-car prototype train set.

The stock, part of Bombardier’s Movia family, will be delivered in the form of 133 seven-car and 58 eight-car trains between late 2009 and 2015 [cite press release

] and will also feature air conditioning throughout - the sub-surface tunnels being able to displace the exhausted hot air. These trains will also have regenerative brakes, returning around 20% of their energy use to the network and so will reduce energy consumption. The trains are planned to have faster acceleration than the present trains, but their top speed will be capped at 62 mph (100 km/h). This is 8 mph slower compared to the maximum speed of the A-Stock (70 mph) but is still faster than the C and D stocks. During the period of dual operation between old and new trains, the S-stock trains will have their performance capped to match that of the older trains in order to comply with signalling constraints and avoid bunching of the service. Based on the official figures from Bombardier the new trains in the 8 car configuration will be able to accommodate 306 seated passengers compared with 448 passengers of the A-stock a reduction of 32% - however S-stock will be capable of accommodating 25% more standing passengers (1226 as compared to 976 in A-stock) and will have dedicated space for wheel-chair users.

S Stock will not be used for the extended East London Line, as the ELL is being transferred to London Overground, and will instead be worked using a new batch of Electrostar units. [cite press release
