The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is located in Roorkee, a township in Uttarakhand, India. Instituted as Thomason college of Civil Engineering in year 1847 by British, it was rechristened as University of Roorkee in year 1949. It was restructured in 1948 as the University of Roorkee, as the first engineering university of modern India.

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

The oldest institute of technical education in Asia and the erstwhile British Empire to award its own degrees (as the College of Engineering, Guindy was not a degree granting institution since its inception in 1794), IIT Roorkee celebrated its sesquicentennial (150th year) anniversary in October 1996. On September 21 2001, an ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation's seventh Indian Institute of Technology. IIT Roorkee offers a wide range of academic programmes. It runs eleven Under Graduate, five Integrated Dual Degree, three Integrated M.Tech.,three integrated M.Sc., sixty one Post Graduate and several Doctoral Programmes. [ [http://www.iitr.ernet.in/academics/pages/index.html Academics ] ]

Along with the engineering courses, IIT Roorkee also offers a 2 year residential MBA program. The Department of Management Studies also offers PhD in various disciplines. Admission for these courses are through JMET, a centralized entrance examination for the MBA programs at various IITs.

IIT Roorkee is also running an MCA programme. Typically, the MCA is a 3 year fulltime degree course consisting of six semesters. It covers various aspects of computing, accounting, finance, programming, design and managing networks and databases. Admission for this course is through JAM (joint admission test), a centralized examination for two-year MSc programmes at all IITs, Three-year MCA and M Tech in Applied Geology/ Applied Geophysics at IIT Roorkee, MSc-PhD Dual Degree in Physics at IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur.

Prior to being converted into an IIT, the University selected students through an entrance exam, REE (Roorkee Entrance Exam) conducted on an All-India level. The selectivity of REE was close to 2%.Fact|date=May 2007 The Institute continues the legacy by admitting students to B.Tech. and B.Arch. courses through the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at various centers all over India. Academics

*Degrees offered: The Institute offers Bachelor degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate degrees in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Sciences, Architecture and Planning. The Institute has facility for doctoral work in all Departments and Research Centres. There are roughly 4200 students in the Institute across all programs. Around 375 faculty belonging to various science and engineering disciplines are engaged in teaching, research and consultancy activities here. With effect from 2003, integrated dual degrees are also offered, which means that students get both B. Tech and M. Tech degrees in 5 years rather than the customary 4+2 years.Fact|date=May 2007

*IIT-JEE: The entrance examination for undergraduate courses conducted jointly by the seven IITs and two other institutes namely IT-BHU, Varanasi (Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University) and ISM, Dhanbad (Indian School of Mining). It is amongst the toughest entrance examinations in the world. About 4,000 students are chosen from about 250,000 candidates.

*Credit system: As in other IITs, IIT Roorkee follows a credit system for evaluating academic performance. The Grade Point Average (GPA) is on a scale of 0 to 10. Different courses are alloted different number of credits according to their importance.

Hostels(Bhawans)

Most students at IIT Roorkee live in the hostels, where a large number of extracurricular activities complement the hectic academic routine. The campus has nine hostels, of which two (Sarojini and Kasturba) are exclusively occupied by girls. Hostels in IIT Roorkee may accommodate undergraduate and graduate students along with doctoral students. Students are assigned to hostels by the Institute Administration after their freshmen year. The hostels are named after eminent personalities of India and Britain during the Indian Freedom Struggle. The hostels are:

Each bhawan has its mess, which is run on the basis of tenders.Mess administration consists of a staff advisor and a chief advisor.Moreover a mess secretory, representative of students, is also in the body for decisions on various the mess-issues.

tudent life

The technical fest of IIT Roorkee is called "Cognizance", the cultural fest is called "Thomso"and the nature & hobbies fest is called SRISHTI. Also, 'Rave' is another cultural fest arranged by the students at the Saharanpur Campus.

There are a annual magazine namely "LIONS" and two campus magazines brought out by the students of IITR namely "Watch Out" and "Kshitij". Also, the students at the Saharanpur Campus bring out a bi-annual campus magazine named 'Renaissance'.

The institute also has a Student Affair Council (SAC), which is the apex students body dedicated to the service of students in the campus and acts as an interface between the administration and the students' community.

There are various sections which have been constituted under the cultural society (CULSOC) which include music, dramatics, chreography section, programme management, audio section and light section. It also has an active SPICMACAY chapter which organizes various cultural programs and help to inculcate the spirit of Indian classical music and culture amongst the students, faculty, etc.

Hobbies Club

The Hobbies Club is the only one of its kind amongst all the IITs. It aims at facilitating activities under its 8 sections: Electronics, Fine Arts, Gardening, Model Section, Philately and Numismatics, Photography, Star Gazing and Web Designing.

The hobbies club council is headed by a Chief Advisor, who is well supported by two Deputy Chief Advisors (for administration and finance) and a council secretary (student representative). Further each section has its own personnel and technicians for proper working. The personnel consist of a Staff Advisor supported by one Secretary and a Joint Secretary, who are selected from amongst the members. This Administrative Hierarchy ensures active student participation as well as the smooth running of the Hobbies Club.

The hobbies club also hosts India's some of the most talked about events like SRISHTI which is an all India contest encompassing technical institutes and educational institutions across the country.

Information Management Group

It provides technical solutions, tools, resources and knowledge for the enhancement of web applications and information resources, and other technical fields such as GIS, networking and security.

The Information Management Group, (IMG), is called so, because by concept, it works on various programs related to the intellectual and managerial application in diversified disciplines. The group currently is responsible for the development of Information Resources and for the promotion of electronic culture in Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee.

Strong linkages of IMG with academia, workplace professionalism, and in-house training and learning have helped it to lay the foundation for growing into a big organization. As the intellectual horizons enlarged to understand better and address the opportunities of the IT era, the group grew in several directions.

Himalayan Explorers' Club

The Mountaineering & Trekking Club founded in 1971 was the forerunner of the Himalayan Explorers' Club (HEC). Between 1971 & 1974 the Institute Sports Association nurtured the Mountaineering & Trekking Club which fostered all mountaineering, trekking and outward bound activities amongst science, engineering and professional student community of the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee.In July 1975 the first major high altitude expedition in the Himalayas was organized successfully in joint collaboration with the Nainital Mountaineering Club, Nainital. With effect from the academic session of 1975-76 , the Mountaineering and Trekking Club was rechristened as the Himalayan Explorers' Club (HEC). Between July 1976 and August 1977 , the HEC organized a series of three major expeditions in the Garhwal Himalayas (to Mt. Rudragaigra (19500 ft) in July 1976, to Mt. Thelu (20,000 ft) in October 1976 and to Mt. Kedar Dome (23,000 ft) in June 1977) in which as many as 35 students of the University of Roorkee participated.With effect from the academic session of 1978-79 , the Himalayan Explorers' Club was accorded the status of a separate functional body . As an independent body, HEC, was restructured and to start with had three different sections:

NSS

National Service Scheme

With the goal to work for the betterment of society and instill the spirit of social service among the young students, IIT Roorkee established NSS at institute level, headed by Dean of Students Welfare, IIT Roorkee. Currently, NSS, IIT Roorkee has over 200 active members from different disciplines, working rigorously for community health care, literacy drives, and environmental protection. Blood donation camps, AIDS awareness camps, informative lecture on Human values are organized regularly. Watch Out

It has its origin dating back to the year 1993 when a group of students came up with a novel idea of a newsletter. First issue of Watch out was printed on computer stationery.

Ten years down, Watch Out is now a part of the IIT-R ethos with every event on campus, however insignificant, finding a place in its pages.In order to achieve these unparalleled results over the last decade, WONA (Watch out News Agency) clubs itself into 5 sections: Web Cell, The Editorial Board, The News Bureau, The Finance Section and The Design Board.

SPIC MACAY stands for Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth. It is a non profit, voluntary organization which aims at fighting deculturisation of India by promoting classical music. SPIC MACAY IIT Roorkee Chapter is managed by a group of student enthusiasts who are engaged in a constant endeavor to create further awareness and appreciation of our culture. By organizing classical dance, folks, vocals and lectures on campus as well as in the neighboring schools, IIT Roorkee chapter tries to contribute maximum to the rich Indian culture.

EDC

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell of IIT-Roorkee , commonly known as EDC, has been established with the objective of creating, fostering and promoting the spirit of entrepreneurship among the youth of the nation. Created in the early months of 2006, the cell has already taken rapid strides in cultivating entrepreneurial temper and has succeeded in carving a niche for itself. The cell has organized a plethora of events under its aegis in the few months since its inception and these events have witnessed healthy participation from students, not only from IIT-Roorkee but also from colleges all across the country. In pursuance of its goals, the cell has set up both short and long-term objectives. The short term objectives aim at bolstering an environment conducive for entrepreneurial thinking and action through the organization of a variety of entrepreneurship-oriented events such as business plan contests, case studies, business quizzes, social entrepreneurship issues' solutions and so forth. The long term objectives aim at setting up an incubator at IIT-Roorkee for aiding students who have a marketable idea or project and aspire to start their own ventures.

Renaissance

Renaissance, a newly founded literary magazine of IIT Roorkee's Saharanpur Campus is a platform for the students to lay bare their point of view on any topic on earth. It is a biannual magazine started on October 6, 2002.

The magazine besides bringing out point of view of students also, serves as a forum to publish the achievements of the students of the campus to industry, the alumni of the institute and other academic institutions. In past the magazine has served as vital point of contact of the student to the other stakeholders of the erstwhile IPT Campus (now called Saharanpur campus).
