Virtualization engine

Virtualization engine

In computing, a virtualization engine is the concept of giving a holistic view of all the resources in the entire network infrastructure. The holistic view is independent of the physical data storage devices and their geographic location.

A good example of virtualization is IBM's virtualization engine which offers a common way to address component level devices

Virtualization engines have existed in the mainframe environment for years, but the concept is only now catching up in heterogeneous corporate computer networks.

Current virtualization engines are in sharp contrast to the partitioning based virtualization that is limited in its scope and only offers a logical view of data storage partitions.
