February 3 ,1914 –November 23 ,1978 ) was a professional football end and later a coach in theNational Football League 'sDetroit Lions and theAmerican Football League 'sMiami Dolphins .He attended
Northwestern University and played professionally for theChicago Bears from 1937 to 1946, winning fourNFL Championship s as a player. In 1957, he became thehead coach of the Detroit Lions and in that same season won theNFL Championship over theCleveland Browns , 59-14. He was replaced following the 1964 season and coached one year as an assistant for theWashington Redskins before being named the first ever head coach of theAmerican Football League expansion franchise theMiami Dolphins in 1966.
