Democratic Muslims in Denmark

Democratic Muslims in Denmark

Democratic Muslims (Danish: Demokratiske muslimer) is a political movement in Denmark founded by Naser Khader, Yildiz Akdogan and other Muslims in February 2006 after the escalation of the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy. Its goal is a peaceful co-existence of Islam and democracy. Its original name was Moderate Muslims, but they changed their name quickly after being founded.

The charter and purpose of Democratic Muslims is described as being a central place, essential outlet and debating forum for citizens of Denmark of a Muslim background, as well as an organisation to help create activities which further the understanding that Islam is compatible with a democratic state. The organisation work to further the understanding that Islam is compatible with democracy and, especially in light of the Muhammed cartoons, freedom of speech.
