Jagmohanlal Sinha

Jagmohanlal Sinha (born 12 May, 1920 - 20 March, 2008) was a former Indian Permanent Judge. He was known mostly for his 1975 ruling on the election of then Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi , in which he declared the election invalid. Events that followed his decision resulted in the Prime Minister declaring a state of emergency in India.

He was educated at Government High School in Aligarh, at Bareilly College in Bareilly, and at Meerut College in Meerut. He began his law practice as a pleader in Bareilly from 1943 to 1955. After that, he worked as District Government Counsel (Criminal) Bareilly until 3 June, 1957. He has also worked as a Civil & Sessions Judge, Additional District Judge, District & Sessions Judge and Joint Secretary of the Law Department of the U.P. Govt. On 3 January, 1970, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court. On 25 August, 1972, he was appointed Permanent Judge. He finally retired from service in 1982.

He died at the age of 87 due to age related problems in Allahabad¹.
