Lithobolos

Lithobolos

Lithobolos (Stone-Throwers) were artillery weapons used in ancient warfare and medieval warfare. These machines threw stones of 10lb to 180lb in weight. They all looked alike and differed only in size: the dimensions being calculated by a complex mathematical formula based on the spring diametre. [Warry, J. (1995). "Warfare in the Classical World". Video games

They are represented in the RTS Age of Empires by Microsoft. A stone thrower in Age of Empires, is more like a Mangonel, Onager, or Siege Onager, these are kinds of Siege engines that are very effective against massed troops. They have a bar in the middle so that the throwing arm hits the bar and throws the stone(s) straight forward. Mangonels are the weakest stone throwers, and Siege Onagers are the biggest and most powerful stone throwers.
