László

László

László is a popular Hungarian given name pronounced [laːsloː] . Its main namedays are 27 June and 8 August. The most common short (diminutive, familiar) form of the name is "Laci". The name might appear as surname as well.

The name originates from Slavic Vladislav which was borrowed into Old Hungarian as [ladislaβ] (dropping the first consonant as consonant clusters were disallowed in Old Hungarian), developing via > [laːtslɒw] (dropping the second open syllables's vowel and lengthening the first vowel as a compensation) to modern > [laːsloː] (by deafricatisationand a diphthong > long vowel shift). It is commonly latinised as "Ladislaus" (as an intermediate form between the Slavic original and the Hungarian form (having dropped the V)).
