The Saskatchewan Research Council is a provincial crown corporation conducting research on behalf of the provincial government and private industry. For more than 60 sixty years (SRC) has been providing smart science solutions™. As Saskatchewan’s lead provider of applied research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) and technology commercialization, SRC primarily fulfills the role in the innovation chain between the knowledge creators (universities and fundamental research labs) and technology users and implementers in the industrial and commercial sectors.

Each year, SRC conducts an economic impact assessment, working with clients, to assess the direct impacts SRC is having on the Saskatchewan economy. In SRC’s most recent assessment all-time record impacts were reached with more than $400 million in direct economic benefit to the province plus 3,000 jobs created or maintained. In addition, it was identified that more than $12 million worth of SRC’s project work was significantly aimed at creating positive environmental and/or societal impacts. Among the benefits is a finding that SRC’s work contributed to at least 24,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions reduction or prevention.

Strategic Sectors

SRC’s work is extremely diverse and conducted in a number of strategic sectors including:

The "Alternative Energy and Manufacturing Division" serves Saskatchewan’s manufacturing, home and commercial building, and emerging alternative energy sectors. With strong product and instrumentation R&D capabilities, the division also supports Saskatchewan’s mining, petroleum, and value-added processing sectors. The division has the expertise and facilities to provide product development and control systems support to companies involved in automotive, mining, building, mechanical, metal, plastic, wood, electronic, and software products and processes.

The "Energy Division" provides solutions to technical problems in the production and distribution of fossil energy within the province for both the domestic and export market. The division’s main focus is petroleum resource development, but it is also involved in the development of new technologies for fossil energy development. The Pipe Flow Technology CentreTM is positioned as a world leader in multi-phase pipeline transportation technology that is applied by the mining and petroleum industries across Canada. The SRC Biofuels Test CentreTM is the only facility of its kind in Saskatchewan to support the ethanol and biodiesel industries.

The "Environment and Forestry Division" provides research and development, consulting, and analytical services to address the environmental side of sustainable development. The division contains expertise in all areas that are necessary to understand impacts on the environment. The division has expertise in technical areas such as air quality, soil, water quality, environmental remediation, climate change impacts and adaptations, forest, and agro-forestry.

The "Mining and Minerals Division" serves the mineral resource sector with a strong focus on Saskatchewan resources while conducting work for clients across Canada and internationally. The Mineral Exploration, SRC 3D Virtual Reality Centre TM, and Geoanalytical Laboratories business units focus on providing leading-edge research, development and technical services in support of mineral exploration. The Mineral Extraction and Mineral Processing business units provide services to the sector across the spectrum from initial research and exploration through to mining, processing, and decommissioning.

The "Agriculture, Biotechnology and Food Division" supports a sustainable and diverse value-added agriculture industry and is comprised of three areas of practice. For more than three decades, SRC has been active in researching, technology/feasibility assessment, and applying technologies in the area of bioprocessing. Our breadth of activities in includes bioenergy, biofuels, and bioproducts ranging from production, to testing and certification, to end-use applications. GenServe Laboratories™ is a commercial genetics facility that focuses on genetic services and applied technology for agriculture and biotechnolgy industries. As a result, Saskatchewan has played a fundamental role as a supporting laboratory for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s testing during the BSE crisis. The Health and Food laboratories have been conducting work in support of Canada’s agriculture industry with a focus on animal health projects such as vaccine development and crop improvement projects such as microbial inoculants. On November 2, 2007, pre-licensing work was completed and SRC received a Veterinary Biologics Establishment License from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency resulting in SRC obtaining the unique status as the only contract research organization in Canada with this type of license.
