Terry Walsh

Terry Walsh

Terence ("Terry") Arthur Walsh (born November 20, 1953 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia) is a former field hockey striker from Australia, who competed in two Olympic Games for his native country. Highlights were winning the silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal, and the gold medal at the Hockey World Cup in London, 1986. In total he competed in 165 international matches for Australia.

After his active career he became a hockey coach, first with Malaysia. Walsh was appointed Head Coach of The Kookaburras and the Australian Institute of Sport Men's Hockey Unit after the 1996 Summer Olympics. He led the Men's National Team to the bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics, but was sacked afterwards, and replaced by former team mate Barry Dancer.

In December 2003 he was appointed head coach of The Netherlands, their first foreign coach ever, after Joost Bellaart had to step down after an internal crisis within the Holland squad. Walsh led the Dutch to the silver medal in Athens, where his former team Australia won the final after a golden goal by striker Jamie Dwyer. After the Champions Trophy in Lahore, where The Netherlands finished second once again, he stepped down and became the Technical Director for USA Field Hockey.
