Satu Mare Swabians

Satu Mare Swabians

The Satu Mare Swabians (German: Sathmarer Schwaben) are a German ethnic group that lives near the city of Satu Mare in Romania, and forms part of the broader group known as Danube Swabians.

Most were originally farmers in Upper Swabia who came to Hungary/Partium (present-day territory of Romania) during the 18th century East Colonisation.

The are mainly living in the districts of Foieni, Urziceni, Capleni, Petresti, Tiream, Beltiug, Ardud and in the cities of Carei and Satu Mare.

Along with other German-speaking groups in Romania, the Satu Mare Germans are represented in politics by the DFDR (Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania).
