The University Line is a line in the TRAX light rail system in the Salt Lake City, Utah area, operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). It is the second line in the TRAX system, after the Sandy/Salt Lake Line, and is named for the University of Utah, which is where the line ends. The line is entirely routed within Salt Lake City. The line opened in two parts: in December 2001, the line opened to Rice-Eccles Stadium at the University, with 4 new stations and convert|3.5|mi, and also opening not only ahead of schedule but also in time for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and in September 2003, a convert|1.3|mi|sing=on, 3-station extension to the University Medical Center opened, opening 14 months ahead of schedule.

On the official TRAX route map, the UTA shows the line in red; however, it is not called the "Red Line".

Description of route

Originally starting at the EnergySolutions Arena at South Temple Street and 300 West, the end of the line was extended several blocks to Salt Lake Central Station in 2008, where it connects with FrontRunner. The extension started at 250 South 600 West and proceeded north a half block to 200 South, stopping at the Old Greek Town station. The line then proceeded to 500 West and turned north and then east, stopping at the EnergySolutions Arena station. From the extension the route follows South Temple Street, turning south to Main Street. The line diverts at 400 South, heading east and ending its sharing of track with the Salt Lake/Sandy line. Traveling on 400 South to 900 East, passenger cars proceed 500 South and enter the University of Utah campus. Trains turn north at University Street, and then east at South Campus Drive. The route continues on South Campus Drive to Wasatch Drive, which it turns north at. Finally, it follows Wasatch Drive to terminate at the University Medical Center.
