Zahirabad is a town and a municipality in Medak district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

Etimology

Zahirabad is named after a Paigah nawab called Zaheer Yar Jung.

Geography

Zahirabad is located at coord|17.68|N|77.62|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/2/Zahirabad.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Zahirabad] ] . It has an average elevation of 622 metres (2040 feet).

Features

Zahirabad is located about 100 km from Hyderabad on the Mumbai-Hyderabad national highway (NH-9). It is well connected by rail and road. It is surrounded by many villages where agriculture is the main occupation of the people. It is also surrounded by many industries which provide employment. Some of the major companies located around Zahirabad include Mahindra & Mahindra, Trident Sugars Ltd (formerly Nizam Sugars), Mungi(Bus body building unit). One can find ATMs(SBI,Syndicaate Bank), cinema halls(5), lodges, and many dhabass.

It is near to the city of Bidar, Karnataka(about 25 kim). There is a 'T' junction near Zahirabad on the NH-9 from which the road to Bidar starts.

The nearby villages mainly cultivate sugar cane. It has good warehouse, godowns, and a market facility.

A special & popular Sidhi vinayaka temple is located on the Zahirabad-Bidar state highway some 13 km from zahirabad.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Zahirabad had a population of 140,160 . Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Zahirabad has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 55%. In Zahirabad, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.
