"Who's That Girl" is the first single by American singer-songwriter Madonna from the soundtrack album and motion picture "Who's That Girl" and was released on June 30, 1987 by Sire Records. It later appeared on the 1991 UK compilation EP "The Holiday Collection", which was released to accompany the 1990 compilation album "The Immaculate Collection", on which it did not appear.

ong information

The single was a huge success all around the world and effortlessly made it to the number one spot in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Spain, Canada, South Africa and many others. The song was nominated for "Best Song From A Motion Picture" at the 1988 Grammy Awards and "Best Original Song" at the 1988 Golden Globe Awards. The song topped the charts in several countries. Despite the song's immediate success, at the time, it was criticized by some magazines, such as "Rolling Stone", as an attempt to further capitalize on Madonna's previous single, "La Isla Bonita."

"Who's that Girl" debuted the week of July 11, 1987, at number forty-three, on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, about one month after "La Isla Bonita" fell out of the top forty. Like most Madonna singles of the 1980s, "Who's That Girl" reached the summit rapidly, advancing 2-1 the week of August 22. The song was one of the most popular singles of the summer of 1987, remaining in the top twenty for eight weeks. The single was the thirteenth consecutive top ten single, and the fourteenth consecutive top twenty single, and the sixth number one hit beating out Diana Ross who had five number one singles at the time.

Thus far Madonna has only performed this song on one of her tours, the "Who's That Girl World Tour" in 1987. In 2003, when Madonna fans were asked to vote for their top twenty Madonna singles of all time by "Q-Magazine", "Who's That Girl" was allocated the number nineteen spot.

Music video

The music video to promote the release of Who's That Girl featured Madonna with short dark hair, dancing with children, watching live-action and animated scenes of herself from the film, either in a fountain or by a fortune teller. It was shot in May 1987 at Grayhall Mansion in Beverly Hills, California.

Although never commercially released in the US, the video was included as a bonus on the film's videocassette release in France; it was also featured on the promotional-only instore video compilations "It's That Girl" and "She's Breathless".
