The Slavey (also Slave) are a
First Nations aboriginal people of theDene group, indigenous to theGreat Slave Lake region, inCanada 'sNorthwest Territories , and extending into northeasternBritish Columbia and northwesternAlberta .This name was previously spelled in English as "Slave" but was changed to avoid confusion with the common noun referring to
slavery . Likewise, in French the former name was "Esclaves", literally meaning persons in servitude.The confusion still exists with regard to the
Slave River andGreat Slave Lake , whose names are derived from the above, and whose spelling was not changed.ee also
