Rothschild

Rothschild

Rothschild (variant: Rothchild) is a German surname. It is a habitational name from a house distinguished with a red sign (Middle High German rot (or roth)= "red" + schild = "sign", "shield"), the earliest recorded example dating from the 13th century.

The standard German pronunciation, IPA2|ˈroːtˌʃɪlt, can be rendered in English pronunciation spelling as approximately "Rote-shilt". Note that the "s" in the middle belongs to the second syllable "schild", not the first "roth". In English the surname is usually pronEng|ˈrɒθtʃaɪld "Roth-child" or IPA|/ˈrɒθstʃaɪld/ "Roth's-child".
