"Romance of the Three Kingdoms II" (released in Japan as "Sangokushi II" for Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and as "Sangokushi II for WonderSwan" for WonderSwan) is the second in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series of turn-based strategy games produced by Koei based upon the book "Romance of the Three Kingdoms".

Gameplay

Upon starting the game, players choose from one of six scenarios that determine the initial layout of power in ancient China. The scenarios loosely depict allegiances and warlord holdings in the novel, although gameplay does not follow events after the game begins:

* Dong Zhuo Seizes Loyang (189 A.D.)
* Rivals Struggle for Power (194 A.D.)
* Aged Liu Bei Hides (201 A.D.)
* Cao Cao Covets Control of China (208 A.D.)
* Nation Breaks into 3 Divisions (215 A.D.)
* The Three-way Contest (220 A.D.)

After choosing the scenario, players determine which warlord(s) they will control. Custom characters may be inserted into territories unoccupied by other forces, as well. A total of 41 different provinces exist, as well as over 200 unique characters. Each character has three statistics, which range from 1 to 100 (higher is better). A warlord's Intelligence, War Ability and Charm influence how successful he or she will be when performing certain tasks, such as dueling or increasing land value in a province.

The goal of the game is to conquer China. This is accomplished by holding every province on the map.

New features

A new reputation system, which affect the decline rate of officer's loyalty.

Added treasures, which increase officer's ability. Treasure can be obtained by conquering any country but always map county 10.

With the use of advisor, player can predict the chance of successfully execute a decision. Advisor with intellect of 100 always correctly predict the result.

Intercept messengers.

Ability to create new rulers.

Bugs

With the presence of advisor, after assigning an officer to perform a task, if player choose to abandon the action after advisory, the affected officer loses a turn. This may be necessary for game balance, but is unrealistic.

An advisor has been known to insult the ruler he is working for when he is summoned for advice before the player plots strategy.
