The Second Congressional District of Georgia represents most of the southwestern fourth of Georgia. This district is one of the largest districts by size. Much of the district is rural, and peanuts are the major crop in this district. The district does have its share of medium-sized towns such as Albany. The district is also the historic home of Jimmy Carter and has a reputation for being progressive on racial issues.

Even though the district is 60% white, the district has elected Democrat Sanford Bishop, an African-American, since 1993, making Bishop the only Black representative of a White-majority district in the South. Bishop has had a few close races, nonetheless, his standing as a conservative Democrat has helped him win the support of many white voters.Fact|date=April 2008
