The Centaur family served as major characters in the Xanth series by Piers Anthony. [Piers Anthony, "Centaur Aisle" (Xanth Novels) (Mass Market Paperback) (Del Rey, 1987).]

Herman the Hermit Centaur

He is an uncle of Chester Centaur. He was exiled from Centaur Isle for having the magic talent of summoning Will O' The Wisps. In "A Spell for Chameleon" he gave his life fighting off a wiggle swarm to save Xanth.

Chester Centaur

He is the husband of Cherie Centaur and father of Chet Centaur and Chem Centaur. An ornery male centaur whose equine portion is beautiful but whose human portion is ugly and brutish. His magic talent is to summon a small silver flute that plays beautiful music. His uncle is Herman the Hermit Centaur. He was introduced in "A Spell for Chameleon". He has also appeared in "The Source of Magic", "Golem in the Gears", "Vale of the Vole", and "Question Quest".

Cherie Centaur

She is the wife of Chester Centaur and mother of Chet Centaur and Chem Centaur. Her talent is beauty. Cherie is very disapproving of magical talents amongst centaurs and hybrids within the centaur kind but accepts them. She was introduced in "A Spell for Chameleon". She has also appeared in "The Source of Magic", "Golem in the Gears", and "Vale of the Vole".

Chet Centaur

He is the foal of Chester Centaur and Cherie Centaur, mate of Sea-Cow, and father of Cencow. His talent is shrinking inanimate objects, but is unable to return them to their rightful size. Chet first appeared in "The Source of Magic". He has also appeaered in "Centaur Aisle", "Ogre, Ogre", "Night Mare", "", "Vale of the Vole", and "The Dastard".

ea-Cow

She is the mate of Chet Centaur and mother of Cencow. She is introduced in "The Dastard".

Cencow

He is the foal of Chet Centaur and Sea-Cow. He mated with a griffiness and had a son named Dell Centaur and two daughters named Mesta Centaur and Merei Centaur. He is introduced in "The Dastard".

Dell Centaur

He is the foal of Cencow and a griffiness. His talent is that he can change into any landbound creature. He is introduced in "The Dastard".

Merei Centaur

She is the foal of Cencow and a griffiness. Her talent is that she can changed into any winged creature. She is introduced in "The Dastard".

Mesta Centaur

She is the foal of Cencow and a griffiness. Her talent is that she can changed into any sea creature. She is introduced in "The Dastard".

Chem Centaur

She is the foal of Chester Centaur and Cherie Centaur and mother of Chex Centaur by Xap Hippogryph. Her talent is projecting maps. She was introduced in "Ogre, Ogre". She has also appeared in "Night Mare", "Dragon on a Pedestal, ", "Vale of the Vole", and "Question Quest".

Xap Hippogryph

He is the mate of Chem Centaur and father of Chex Centaur. He is introduced in "Dragon on a Pedestal". He has also appeared in "Vale of the Vole", "Man from Mundania", and "Question Quest".

Chex Centaur

She is the foal of Chem Centaur and Xap Hippogryph; wife of Cherion Centaur; and mother of Che Centaur, Chelsy Centaur, and Cherish Centaur. Her talent, as with all winged centaurs, is to lighten things with a flick of her tail. She was introduced in "Vale of the Vole". She has also appeared in "Heaven Cent", "Man from Mundania", "Isle of View", "Question Quest", "The Color of Her Panties", "Harpy Thyme", "Geis of the Gargoyle", and "Roc and a Hard Place".

Cheiron Centaur

He is the foal of a male centaur and a winged horse; husband of Chex Centaur; and father of Che Centaur, Chelsy Centaur, and Cherish Centaur. He was introduced in "Vale of the Vole". He has also appeared in "Heaven Cent", "Man from Mundania", "Isle of View", "Question Quest", "The Color of Her Panties", and "Roc and a Hard Place".

Che Centaur

He is the foal of Cherion Centaur and Chex Centaur and husband of Cynthia. He was destined to change the history of Xanth. All winged creatures are sworn to his protection (including Dolph who was at the wedding in winged monster form) because he is Simurgh's chick's tutor. He is the companion of Gwendolyn Goblin and friend of Jenny Elf. He is introduced in "Isle of View". He also appeared in "The Color of Her Panties", "Harpy Thyme", "Roc and a Hard Place", "Yon Ill Wind", "Zombie Lover", "The Dastard", "Swell Foop", "Currant Events", and "Pet Peeve".

Cynthia

She is the wife of Che Centaur. Her talent makes children accept her as a parent. She was transformed by Trent into the form of a winged centaur. She stayed in the The Brain Coral's pool for 72 years. She was introduced in "Harpy Thyme". She has also appeared in "Geis of the Gargoyle", "Roc and a Hard Place", "Yon Ill Wind", "Zombie Lover", "Swell Foop", and "Pet Peeve".

Chelsy Centaur

She is the foal of Cherion Centaur and Chex Centaur. She is introduced in "Roc and a Hard Place".

Cherish Centaur

She is the foal of Cherion Centaur and Chex Centaur. She is introduced in "Roc and a Hard Place".
