Walt Whitman High School, South Huntington

Walt Whitman High School is located at 301 West Hills Road, in Huntington Station, New York. It is part of the South Huntington Union Free School District, and is the district's only high school. Ranging from year to year, the school typically has around 2,000 students in grades 9–12.

History

It is named after the famous poet Walt Whitman, whose birthplace is within walking distance from the school. It has been graduating students since 1957. At that time, the town had grown and Central High School was no longer large enough. The current building that houses the school was built in 1955. A north wing was completed a few years later. The school continually improves upon the facilities with adding a cardio room, turf field, and updating the gymnasiums.

WWHS has several famous alumni. Jimmy Haslip, founder and bass player of the jazz fusion group "The Yellowjackets" graduated in 1970. The following year, Bruce Kapler, sax player on The Late Show with David Letterman, was graduated. Notable athletes from WWHS include former NBA star Tom Gugliotta, boxing heavyweight champion contender Gerry Cooney.

Academically, the school offers studies in English, mathematics, science, social studies, health, art, music, drama, dance, physical education, business, and industrial arts. Students are also given the option to take Advanced Placement Courses, with curriculum mandated by the College Board.

The Fine Arts Department includes award winning ensembles, such as the three time NY state 2nd place champions, the Walt Whitman Wildcat Marching Band, the frequent Gold Medals for the Chorus, Band and Orchestra, and the many popular plays and musicals the school puts out every year.
