Club career
Lecce & youth career
Bovo grew up playing in the renowned AS Roma youth system, and was sold on a co-ownership bid to Serie B club Lecce in the 2002/2003 season, which Bovo was exchanged with Mauro Rizzo who both tagged for €3M in although both lack of experience.
Lecce promoted to Serie A and gave Bovo the opportunity to make his Serie A début in 2003.
Returned to Roma
In June 2004, he was bought back by Roma for a nominal fees of €10,000 [1] Co-currently Rizzo returned to Lecce for €40,000.[1]
On 31 August 2004, the 2004 Olympic Bronze Medalists was signed by Palermo in co-ownership deal (i.e. 50% rights), Palermo just paid €1.5M to Roma via transfer the registration rights of young player Francesco Milano (50%, €750K), youth goalkeeper Paolo Comi (50%, €750K) to Roma, which both of them loaned back to Palermo.[2] The deal with Palermo, including sold the remain 50% rights of Simone Pepe to Palermo for undisclosed fee, sold Gianluca Curci and Valerio Virga in co-ownership for a nominal fee of €500, were reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport were due to Roma's President Franco Sensi, owed Palermo's President Maurizio Zamparini money.[3] Zamparini also bought Palermo from Sensi in 2002, which Palermo had some financial irregularity in Sensi era for deals between Palermo and Roma, as the club later fined for Franco Brienza's accounting issue (failed to write-down flopped accounting value). Both club exchanged numbers of player prior 2002–03 season, made both club owed opposite side money. However AS Roma denied any irregularly, said they were totally financial decision and team tactics.[4] Roma did paid €1.75 million net debt to Palermo in June 2004 in cash, but Comi and Milano did not turned to become professional, effectively made Roma gave half of the registration rights of Bovo to Palermo in exchanged for flopped youth players.
Both teams agreed Bovo remained at Parma F.C. on loan, which the loan deal was signed earlier on 31 July for €100,000,[5] as part of the deal of centre defender Matteo Ferrari to Roma. At Parma, Bovo played as a regular for the whole season, showing good potential. In 2005, he finally returned to AS Roma, as the club faced a transfer ban due to the illegal signing of Philippe Mexès.[6] Roma paid Palermo €750,000 via the transfer of Massimo Bonanni to Palermo,[7] where he made 22 appearances with no goals.
Loan periods
In 2006, his co-ownership between Palermo and AS Roma was resolved in favour of the Sicilian club, for another €2.05M,[8][9] moreover Virga returned to Roma for €50,000, Comi and Milano for free, made the club had a net cash flow of €2million from Palermo, to counter the flow in June 2004. However, during the summer training phase, Bovo suffered a foot injury that forced him away from the pitches for a long time, and made only one league appearance for Palermo before being loaned to Torino F.C. on January 2007.
On February 24, 2007 he played his first Serie A match for Torino against Chievo [10]
He returned to Palermo from his loan deal on June 2007, and was subsequently sold to Genoa on July 10 in a co-ownership deal.[11] for reported €2.85 million.
Back to Palermo
On 19 June 2008 is redeemed from Palermo for €5M (part of the deal paid via the transfer of Giuseppe Biava).[12] Along with Simon Kjær and Andrea Raggi, they were planned to replace the vacancies left by Andrea Barzagli, Cristian Zaccardo and Leandro Rinaudo. He was reacquired with the aim to establish him as a starter within the Sicilian team, which promptly happened; after his return to Palermo, Bovo became a mainstay for the club, playing regularly in the following two seasons alongside centre backs Moris Carrozzieri and, successively, Simon Kjær. In 2010-11 season, at first he partnered with Ezequiel Muñoz in 4-4-2 formation, and since January 2011 Sinisa Andelkovic was joined to became a one of the centre backs in 3-5-2 formation. Back to Genoa
On 23 August 2011, Bovo agreed a comeback to Genoa in a loan move with an option to make the move permanent by the end of the season.[13]
International career
Bovo was on the squad of Italy U-21 team that won 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship and 2004 Summer Olympics football tournament. He was also part of the Italian squad for the UEFA U-21 Championship 2006. On 28 August 2010 gets the first call in the national team by new coach Cesare Prandelli.
