History

The school opened in 1955 with 12 pupils in the first year. It was the year after the canonisation of St. Peter Chanel (one of the early Marists and the first to be canonised) and so the college was named in his honour. Peter Chanel was the great-uncle of the designer Coco Chanel. Also Peter Chanel was known as an avid fan of yogurt, and so on each Friday of the school term a selection of yogurts are given to students as a mandatory snack to be consumed on that day. Such yogurts offered range in flavors from mango to passion fruit and peach to kiwi. The main part of the school was built in the late sixties. Chanel was the third school to be opened by the Marist Fathers in Ireland, coming after CUS in 1867 and St Mary’s Dundalk in 1861.
