- Koenigsegg CCX
The Koenigsegg CCX is a mid-engined
roadster from Swedish car manufacturerKoenigsegg . The CCX has been engineered to comply with the US regulation and market demands and is an evolutionary design that replaced theKoenigsegg CCR ."CCX" is an
abbreviation for "Competition Coupe X"; the X commemorating the 10th anniversary, (being theRoman numeral for ten), of the completion and test drive of the first CC vehicle in 1996.web cite|url=http://www.koenigsegg.com/thecars/ccx.asp|title=The new CCX|publisher=Koenigsegg |accessdate=2007-08-31]The CCX was first unveiled on
February 28 ,2006 at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show although its existence was announced earlier. The different fuel and tune allows the CCXR to produce 25% more power than the CCX.web cite|url=http://www.businessweek.com/autos/content/mar2007/bw20070306_481278.htm?chan=autos_hybrids+index+page_news+%3Cspan+style%3D%22font-family%3Aarial%3B%22%3E%2B%3C%2Fspan%3E+features|title=Koenigsegg: World's Fastest and Most Fuel Efficient Car?|publisher=Business Week |date=2007-03-06|accessdate=2007-09-05]Development
Koenigsegg began the CCX project with the aim of entering the world market, though particularly the United States car market. Development engineer Magnus Jaasund said "We wanted to go into the world market, but we couldn’t do it with the old car." To sell cars to the North American market many alterations were made to the design of the CCR; the previously used
Ford Modular engine was replaced by a Koenigsegg engine designed to run on 91octane fuel, readily available in the United States, and to meet theCalifornia n emission standards.web cite|url=http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061030/FREE/61027006|title=2006 Koenigsegg CCX|publisher=Autoweek |accessdate=2007-09-06|last=Vaughn|first=Mark|date=2006-10-30] The front bumper of the CCX is designed to be safer in low speed collisions than previous Koenigseggs and the whole body is 3.46 in (88 millimeters) longer to comply with the United States' rear impact regulations. Additionally the CCX can display United States or Europeannumber plate s.The CCX is auto in|1.6 taller than the CCR and, combined with the
carbon fiber reinforced plastic sports seats bySparco , the CCX allows for auto in|2 of extra headroom that "Autoweek " reviewer Mark Vaughn hypothesises is "to accommodate U.S. NBA stars." Theelectronic control unit has also received an upgrade over the CCR meaning that the CCX is without physicalfuse s and it is lighter than the previous system.pecifications
Performance
The CCX can accelerate from 0–auto mph|62 in 3.2 seconds and from 0–auto mph|124 in 9.8 seconds. [http://www.koenigsegg.com/cars_1_1.html Koenigsegg ] ] According to Koenigsegg it has a top speed in excess of auto mph|250, although this has not been officially verified. On 15th June 2008, a standard fully equipped CCX was independently timed by SportAuto in achieving a record 0-186-0 mph (0-300-0 km/h) in 29.2 seconds, beating SLR McLaren 722, Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, Porsche 997 GT2, Alpina B6 S, Corvette Z06. Engine
While previous Koenigsegg models were powered by a Ford Modular V8 engine sourced from the U.S., the engine of the CCX was designed by Koenigsegg based on the Ford Modular architecture, and assembled for them by Grainger & Worrall, a British company that produces drivetrain components for
Formula One car s.web cite|url=http://www.windingroad.com/reviews-page/koenigsegg-ccx/|publisher=Winding Road |title=2007 Koenigsegg CCX Road Test|date=August 2006|accessdate=2007-09-06|first=Matt|last=Davis] The engine is a 4.7liter Convert|288|cuin|cc|0|abbr=on V8, with dual overhead camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder. The engine block is made of 356 Aluminium that has undergone a T7 heat treatment, a form of acceleratedprecipitation strengthening . [web cite|url=http://www.key-to-metals.com/Article39.htm|publisher=Key to Metals|title=Heat Treatable Aluminum Alloys|accessdate=2007-09-03] The aluminium alloy is stronger than the previous engine and allows a thinner, thus lighter, engine block that will withstand higher cylinder pressures. The engine is boosted by two centrifugal superchargers that increase the compression to Convert|17.5|psi|kPa|0|abbr=on with an 8.2:1 compression ratio. The engine produces Convert|806|bhp|kW|0|abbr=on at 6900rpm and Auto ftlbf|678 of torque at 5700rpm on 91 octane (U.S. rating) gasoline. The engine is lubricated with adry sump system with a separate oil pump, the pistons are cooled by oil sprayed onto them and the oil itself has an external cooler. The CCX engine burns 14 mpg–U.S. / 17 mpg–imp (17 Liters per 100 kilometers).Exterior
The CCX is a two-door
targa top and the removable roof can be stored under the front trunk meaning that, unlike many of its competitors, it can be changed at any location, not only one where the roof can be safely left.web cite|url=http://au.askmen.com/cars/exotic_cars/15b_exotic_car.html |title=Koenigsegg CCX|publisher=Askmen |accessdate=2007-08-31|first=Chris|last=Nagy] The body, made of pre-impregnated carbon fiber andKevlar , is Convert|169|in|mm|abbr=on long, Convert|78.6|in|mm|abbr=on wide and Convert|44.1|in|mm|abbr=on tall with a ground clearance of Convert|3.9|in|mm|abbr=on. As with all previous Koenigsegg models, the "dihedral synchro-helix" actuation doors rotate forward and upwards similar toscissor doors though the Koenigsegg design avoids the problem of the open door obscuring the passenger's entry or exit. [web cite|url=http://www.koenigsegg.com/thecars/design.asp?design=4|title="The Doors"|publisher=Koenigsegg |accessdate=2007-09-05]The CCX has a frontal area of Convert|2894|sqin|m2|abbr=on and a drag coefficient of just 0.30. It also has a flat underside with venturi tunnels at the rear and an optional rear spoiler to improve aerodynamics. Between the 2 speedster humps (humps behind the seats) is a
vortex generator used as aram-air intake that allows higher pressure in the air box without a roof scoop that would increase the frontal area. At auto mph|124 there is 132 lbf (60 kilograms) ofdownforce over the front axle and 143 lbf (65 kilograms) over the rear.web cite| url=http://www.pistonheads.com/roadtests/KoenigseggCCX.htm|title=Koenigsegg CCX|publisher=Piston Heads|date=2006-08-17|first=Ian|last=Kuah|accessdate=2007-09-07]Transmission
The CCX has a six speed
manual gearbox made for Koenigsegg byCima with a twin plateclutch of diameter Convert|8.5|in|mm as default but asequential manual transmission option is available. The power is fed to the wheels through a torque sensitive, limited slip differential . The option to selectgear ratio s is available, but the default ratios of the 2007 CCX can be seen in the table below.Wheels and brakes
The standard CCX wheels are Koenigsegg's
magnesium alloy wheel s, though the option to upgrade to carbon/magnesium wheels which each weigh Convert|6.6|lb|kg less than the standard wheels is available.web cite|url=http://www.koenigsegg.com/thecars/ccx.asp?ccx=2| title=Design Elements|publisher=Koenigsegg |accessdate=2007-09-01] The front wheels have a diameter of Convert|19|in|mm and the rear, Convert|20|in|mm. Each of the wheels is attached by center locking wheel nuts. The car comes withMichelin "Pilot Sport 2" unidirectionaltire s with asymmetric tread. The front tires have codes of 255/35 Y19 and the rear 335/30 Y20.The front and rear
cast iron disc brakes are Convert|14.3|in|mm|abbr=on across with Convert|1.3|in|mm of contact at any point and have 6 piston calipers. The brakes can be upgraded to carbon ceramic brakes which weigh Convert|4.4|lb|kg less per wheel, a diameter of Convert|15|in|mm|abbr=on with Convert|1.3|in|mm|abbr=on of contact and eight piston brake calipers.Top Gear
In 2007, the CCX was the fastest car to complete a lap of the BBC "Top Gear" circuit, in , until it was beaten by the
Ascari A10 with a time of 1:17.3, then by theGumpert Apollo .cite web|url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/show/powerlaps.shtml|title=Top Gear - Power Laps|publisher|BBC|accessdate=2007-10-15] It originally went around the course in 1:20.4, but was then fitted with a non-standard rear spoiler to providedownforce , afterThe Stig spun the original version off the track. The Stig purportedly recommended this modification, correctly predicting that the car would then be the fastest ever round Top Gear's track.cite episode|series=Top Gear|title=Season 8, Episode 2|airdate=2006-05-07 - Jeremy Clarkson: "After the accident, Stig said he reckons this car would be 4 seconds faster than it was if it had a big wing on the back."] Koenigsegg stated that the improvement was due to adjustments other than the spoiler (eg. changes to the adjustable chassis and suspension settings).cite web|author=Svensson, Gunnar|url=http://www.bilsport.se/news.php?id=36110|title=Koenigsegg får Top Gear-vinge|language=Swedish|publisher="Bilsport "|date=2006-06-05|accessdate=2007-03-12]CCXR
The "CCXR" is an "environmentally-friendly" version of the CCX, powered by a highly modified twin-supercharged V8 engine from the CCX, converted to use E85 or E100
ethanol fuel as well as standard 98 octane petrol.Citation|last=Grunet|first=Peter|title=Herbal Essence|newspaper=Top Gear Magazine |pages=138-142|year=2007|date=2007-06-01] When run on regular petrol, the CCXR develops Convert|806|bhp|kW|0|abbr=on, but when the car is run on E85 Biofuel, the CCXR develops Convert|1018|bhp|kW|0|abbr=on. Weight-to-power ratio is 2.76 lb/hp. Torque is Convert|782|ftlb|Nm|0|abbr=on. The CCXR can achieve auto mph|62 in 3.1 seconds.Christian von Koenigsegg is quoted as saying, "Our engineers couldn't quite believe the figures when we tested the car". The increased power is a result of the cooling properties ofethanol in the engine's combustion chambers allowing for a higher pressure in the cylinder and the biofuel having a higheroctane rating of 113 RON compared to 95 RON for gasoline in North America and 100 RON for gasoline in Europe, although the CCXR burns slightly more fuel than the CCX with about 15 mpg (17L/100km). [web cite|url=http://www.koenigsegg.com/geneva2007/index.asp?menu=4|title=CCXR Technical Specifications|publisher=Koenigsegg |accessdate=2007-09-05] The only changes to the engine are modifiedfuel injector s, upgraded fuel lines and piston rings and a higher boost setting on the superchargers.web cite|url=http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Green-Cars/Search-Results/Green-First-Pictures/Koenigsegg-CCXR/?&R=EPI-3621|title=A green Koenigsegg?
