Good Machine

Good Machine is an independent film production and film distribution company started in the early 1990s by its co-founders and producers, Ted Hope and James Schamus.

Good Machine became known in independent film circles for its promotion of new writer-director voices. It helped bring Ang Lee, Hal Hartley, and Nicole Holofcener's work to the attention of American and international audiences. Good Machine has been involved in production and/or distribution of a number of projects, including "The Ice Storm", "The Brothers McMullen", "Happiness", "Flirt", "Office Killer" and "The Tao of Steve".

In 2002, Good Machine was acquired by Universal Pictures. While Ted Hope chose to part with the company, James Schamus remained with Universal, whose new small-picture arm was named Focus Features.

James Schamus is a frequent collaborator with Ang Lee, and Ted Hope is Hal Hartley's sole producer.
