"In the Flat Field" is the debut album by British post-punk/gothic rock band Bauhaus, released in 1980 on 4AD.

History

The band produced the album itself, following three singles: "Bela Lugosi's Dead" on Small Wonder, "Dark Entries" on Axis (which was shortly after renamed 4AD), and "Terror Couple Kill Colonel" on 4AD.

This was the first full-length LP released on 4AD (catalog number CAD13) and received mostly poor reviews by the British music press, mainly because the band was among a small group that refused to be classified and to follow established conventions. The album, for example, did not feature any singles and the band was not particularly helpful in interviews with the music press. However, the groundswell among independent music fans was overwhelming, and "In The Flat Field" is now considered as a classic.

The album was first re-released on CD by 4AD in 1988, with eight bonus tracks including the singles "Dark Entries," "Terror Couple Kill Colonel," and a cover of T. Rex's "Telegram Sam." The cover of this release (CAD13CD) is a negative of the original LP cover with a white background and black letters. In 1998, 4AD remastered and reissued the CD (GAD13CD), restoring the original cover and making it available in the USA for the first time.
