Electoral district of Mandurah

Electoral district of Mandurah

Mandurah is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Mandurah district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Mandurah, and is said to hold the seat of Mandurah. As of 2001, the Member for Mandurah is David Templeman who holds the seat for the Labor Party by a margin of 12.3%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be retained by the Labor Party.

Profile

Inner parts of Mandurah on the eastern shore of the Mandurah Estuary. Includes Mandurah itself, and the suburbs of Dudley Park, Coodnup and parts of Silver Sands and Greenfields. The smallest of the South West Region electorates at just 25 km².

History

Despite its proximity to Perth, the peculiarities of the W.A. electoral system define Mandurah as a non-metropolitan electorate with half the enrolment of a Perth electorate. Created in 1983, it was held for Labor by John Read from 1983 until his defeat in 1989. At the 1989 election, Read's son Keith won the neighbouring seat of Murray, while Liberal Roger Nicholls won Mandurah, holding the seat until defeated by a 7.9% swing in 2001. At the 2001 election, Labor's primary vote was unchanged, but there was a 12.6% shift from the Liberal Party to One Nation, a strong flow of One Nation preferences then responsible for electing sitting Labor's David Templeman.
