Electoral district of Murray-Wellington

Murray is an Electoral District of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Murray district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Murray, and is said to hold the seat of Murray. As of 2005, the Member for Murray is Murray Cowper who holds the seat for the Liberal Party by a margin of 0.8%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be highly contested.

Profile

Based on the Shire of Murray and outer parts of Mandurah, the electorate is 1,738 km² in area. Main centres include Pinjarra, Dwellingup, North Dandalup, Yunderup and the northern Mandurah suburbs of Madora, San Remo, Meadow Springs and parts of Silver Sands and Greenfields.

History

Murray has been revived for the fourth time as the name for an electorate in this district, having previously existed 1890-1911, 1950-83 and again 1989-96. At other times the electorate has been known as Murray-Wellington. Former members include Ross McLarty, who represented the electorate under both names between 1930 and 1962, and served as Premier 1947-53. The last Labor MP for the seat was Keith Read 1989-93.
